I spent the morning at my son’s school, talking about writing for their Arts Week program. I asked them to create a character because I believe great characters create great books.
The characters were hilarious and thoughtful. Lot’s of aliens, a sniper, a girl who grew up in a tanning salon, a giant who played football.
What I loved was their ability to say yes to being abstract and bizarre. The football player who liked to garden in his spare time, the alien sniper who hated jazz music, the robot with deadly allergy and craving for marshmallows.
It made me think of this presentation by Sir Ken Robinson on the problems with education right now.
Nothing has made more sense than his argument. If you have some time, please watch it.
Happy Wednesday smarty pants!
