I was thinking about Hotel New Hampshire last night. In it, Lilly, the writer, suicides by jumping from an open window. The phrase, ‘Keep passing the open window,’ is repeated throughout the novel by various family members. It is both a mantra and a reminder that bad times will pass, so don’t jump out the nearest exit, instead walk quickly past the window and persevere onwards.
“So we dream on. Thus we invent our lives. We give ourselves a sainted mother, we make our father a hero; and someone’s older brother and someone’s older sister – they become our heroes too. We invent what we love and what we fear. There is always a brave lost brother – and a little lost sister, too. We dream on and on: the best hotel, the perfect family, the resort life. And our dreams escape us almost as vividly as we can imagine them… That’s what happens, like it or not. And because that’s what happens, this is what we need: we need a good, smart bear… Coach Bob knew it all along: you’ve got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows.”
― John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire
So let’s talk about 2013. The theme of 2013 was “flooding”. Did you experience flooding in 2013? Feeling overwhelmed, feeling like you were drowning, not waving, yet no one could tell the difference? Did the water creep up slowly? Did emotions threaten to engulf you? Were you up to your neck in murky crap, real or otherwise?
Last year the Chinese Astrology Year of 2013 was the Black Water Snake. The testing of your emotional intelligence and the emotional silt coming up from the deep to be sifted, and disposed of accordingly.
2013 was about surviving. Did you notice the themes of the big films that were made? Gravity. Catching Fire. Captain Phillips. Twelve Years a Slave. Rush. World War Z. Shit was intense in 2013, both off and onscreen.
So what about 2014?
This year we have the Year of Green Wood Horse or Horse in the Clouds.
The themes are: adventures, working like a trojan, risk taking, ideas, blue sky thinking, new beginnings and excitement, going into battle for what you believe in, perseverance.
If I use films as a gauge for the human consciousness, I see some matching themes coming up in films 2014.
